This entry is not going to be about Henry, at least not directly. Although I suppose it will be about his history, his roots, the people and events that led to his existence.
This week, my Grandmother passed away after a courageous few years living with a cancer that was slowly but surely bringing her closer to the end.
I'd like to say a few things about the woman my grandmother was and the influence she had not only on my life, but the lives of my sisters, my cousins, my father (and my mother), my aunt and uncles and no doubt anyone else she came in contact with.
I recently posted this article on my facebook timeline. If you haven't read it, it is titled "I've started telling my daughters I'm Beautiful" and it is about one woman's journey to change the world her daughters will grow up in by teaching them what true beauty is, starting with how she sees herself. My grandmother wasn't an author. She never expressed to me in so many words how to see yourself as beautiful when faced with so many obstacles, yet that was the exact thing she taught me how to do.
Years of sun worship had taken it's toll on my grandmother and skin cancer was ravaging her face. Many people would have looked in the mirror and been discouraged, disappointed or saddened by what my grandmother looked at every day, yet her confidence never waned. She never hesitated to go out, have fun and live life to the very end. She was always elegantly dressed, with her lipstick on, ready to take on the day Even after having a mastectomy to slow the breast cancer she was diagnosed with, Grandma would wake up, put on her fake boobs and come over for dinner. One of the last times I saw my grandmother well at her home, she told me she was thinking about taking ukelele lessons. My grandmother taught me that life is not about how you look, it's about how you choose to live it and that looks are not about what others see but how you see yourself.
Grandma was married twice. My grandfather died when I was about 9 years old. We were living in Austria at the time. Grandma stayed in the home they had together and hung up many pieces of art. She quit smoking at the age of 63, cold turkey (even after starting smoking when she was only 13 years old). She lost her partner but she built a new life that was every bit as exciting (if not more) than her life with my grandfather. A few years later she met Pat. Pat was a wonderful man and he loved my grandmother very much. They were married not too long after they started dating. I remember when they dated, how happy grandma was and how cute they were together. Their wedding was beautiful and it was wonderful to be able to be there. Grandma believed in the afterlife and she must have been thinking about being reunited with granddad some day when she told me that she wasn't worried about loving two men and having two husbands waiting for her in the afterlife because surely that would not be a problem in Heaven. My grandmother taught me that the most important thing is love and that you should love often and without fear.
When Pat died, Grandma moved into a small condo which she loved. One time she called my parents asking if we could bring one of her dining room chairs (which were stored at my parent's house) because when her friends come over they are one chair short. She had many friends in her building. She and her friends would leave easter candy on each other's doorsteps at Easter. It reminded me of a university residence, they partied and laughed and hung out together and looked out for each other. My grandmother taught me that you are never too old to make new friends.
I can't tell the whole tale of my Grandmother's life. I am so lucky that I got to spend so much time with her. My childhood memories of her are all happy visits to her house, playing in the rec room drinking Dr. Pepper and eating chips out of margarine containers, visiting the trailer on rice lake where she would wear terrycloth dresses, getting a present even though it was my sister's birthday so I wouldn't feel left out. I didn't know it at the time, but my grandmother was teaching me how to raise patient, kind humans.
My first memory, not just of my grandmother but of my life, is of my grandmother. I remember going to my Dad's convocation (well, someone told me that part), I remember sitting with her in the auditorium, she was wearing a family ring with birthstones for each of her children and I remember her describing each colour to me and why they were on the ring. It's not a life-shattering memory, but it in so many ways is an example of the woman Grandma was, patient, kind, loved, beautiful, elegant, loving. My grandmother taught me the value of these things.
Grandma, we will all miss you so much and will never forget you. As long as we remember what you taught us, you'll always be with us.

Yarrr Matey!
Ahoy mateys!
Henry and I have been housesitting for my parents the past week. It's been a good time, the weather has been great and the dogs mostly well behaved. Being away from home presented some challenges when it came to hat making this week (such as no white glue in the house, what's up with that)?
I decided on a pirate hat for this week. While researching, I learned that the type of hat I was thinking of when I imagined what it was going to look like is called a tricorn. Who knew? Not to be confused with the bicorn hat made popular by Napoleon Bonaparte.
I also came across a great tutorial on how to create such a hat. At first, I thought it was going to be a lot of work, but upon closer investigation, it didn't actually look so bad. It involved some stretching of felt over a bowl, and or course the aforementioned white glue. I also found an awesome feather at Michaels and a red bandana to complete the look. Oh, and an eyepatch.
Have a look for yourselves:
Not too sure about sittin on the ground here:
Captain Henry's come ashore to check out some treasure:
Is this gold?
Mom, can we please take off this eyepatch now?
You can't really see it in these pictures, but his suit says "Captain Canine's Pirate Tours" oh Carters, always so cute and something for every occasion.

Where's Wald---errr, Henry?
Happy Friday Everyone!
I hope you are all enjoying the heat we're having (if you are in southern Ontario anyway, maybe elsewhere too). Since we've been pretty much housebound today enjoying the air conditioning, I had enough time to finish this week's hat a bit early as well as stage our photo shoot.
The idea for this week actually came from last week. I thought the beanie made Henry look a little like Waldo (of Where's Waldo? fame). I did a little research to see exactly what Waldo's hat really looks like, and here we are! I also happened to have the perfect shirt to complete the costume. I think I actually buy these red and white striped suits because I love the Labyrinth. I'm not going to tell you how awesome it is. In fact, I'm going to assume that since we're friends, you've seen it, so I won't even tell you what it's about or what it has to do with red and white striped baby suits.
I digress, back to the pics:
Did I forget to mention the pipe-cleaner glasses?:
It was hard today to get little man to smile/pay attention/take the toys out of his mouth
Chewing away (tooth eruption #5 is imminent):
Snarfing at me:
Almost a smile, and look, nothing in his mouth!:
What a funny little man, he makes me laugh all day long.

Happy Canada Day!
Happy (belated) Canada Day to all my fellow canadians (and honorary canadians)!
We owe this late update to our visit to the cottage this weekend. The weather was amazing and we had a great time relaxing in the sun and on the newly screened porch (bug free is always a plus).
Henry had a special hat to mark the momentous occasion (Canada that is):
Mommy also appears in a few of these pics if you check out the reflection in the window
A different angle (smiley man):
Oh dad, you're so funny:
"Little Canadian"
He looks a bit like a lumberjack without his antlers:
Here we are just before dinner, Henry's got a new outfit because it's post swim:
Henry was such a good boy all weekend, he even figured out proper crawling as opposed to just dragging himself around everywhere! We're looking forward to our next cottage trip and many more Canada Days to come!

Let's go Blue Jays, let's go!
Happy Sunday everyone! I hope you all have had an excellent weekend so far. The weather could be a little nicer here, but April showers bring May flowers, right? Speaking of flowers, it looks like we have some tulips blooming in our back garden, lovely. I enjoy discovering what is planted in our gardens, since when we moved in, everything was brown.
As many of you know (and some of you probably do not) baseball season has begun. Henry supports his dad's teams in all things (of course) so I made him an extra special hat this week. Hopefully the Jays do better than the Leafs did this year.
Oh, hi mom, is it photoshoot time?
In case you are wondering, I get these patches on ebay. All you have to do is search whatever patch you are looking for (for example "Toronto Blue Jays Patch" and then search through the zillions of hits you get for one that's the right size for any given project). I couldn't get the newest Jays logo so Henry is wearing a retro one (the original logo if I'm not mistaken). Luckily they've returned to their roots with the new logo, so Henry doesn't look too dated ;)
Posing with dad's baseball glove:
Henry is so excited about baseball season he is wearing his baseball suit (even though it's a little chilly for shorts, luckily we're inside today).
Big smiles for mommy:
I love that little hand waving when he's happy! We're looking forward to Henry's first baseball game, hopefully some time this summer. Of course there will be pictures when it happens. Have a great week everyone!

For those about to rock, we salute you
Trevor says this week is Henry's testosterone charged hat week. After much hassling about the lack of manly hats featured, this week I made a simple black toque with a lightning bolt on the front to match Henry's awesome new AC/DC shirt that he got from Debbie (thanks Debbie)! Please note, it is an authentic AC/DC shirt, not one of those AB/CD shirts, this increases Henry's street cred, fyi.
Look at those big muscly arms! (Ok, maybe it's just a bit of baby pudge)
Playing air guitar:
Loving it (can you see that little tooth on the bottom)?
Happy boy!
Notice how well he is sitting up? Such a big boy all of the sudden! Hope you all enjoyed this week's manly feature. I have no idea what we'll do next week, but I'm open to suggestions :)
Cheers!

Hoppy Easter!
As promised, this week's hat is, you guessed it, a bunny hat! Before I show off this marvel, I would like to share a few pictures of one of my family's oldest Easter traditions: dying Easter eggs. This year, my mother, my sister and myself coloured no less than 5 dozen hard boiled eggs. Of course we can't consume all these eggs ourselves, instead we share them with friends, family, neighbours and coworkers. In the end there are hardly any left at all.
This is how we look half way through:
We weren't a huge fan of the see through cups, the bottom is too narrow to fish the eggs out, but they look good in pictures. Here is Chrissy working on a green egg:
And of course, Henry helping with the colouring:
So now for the big one, here are some of the beautiful pictures we had done for easter, taken by the wonderful and extremely talented Stephanie Webster, look at that smile!
I not only made Henry a bunny hat for this shoot, but also a bunny diaper cover, tail and all! Trevor is a little mortified and keeps mumbling things about paying for therapy some day. But look at his little bum!
That's all folks! I wish you all a happy Easter, however you celebrate it!

Signs of Spring
Spring is officially upon us! Although word has it that the temperature will be dropping again in the next few days, you can't deny it, Winter is over at last. We spent most of this week outside enjoying the sunshine. We even went to the zoo!
But of course, this entry would not be complete without a hat that mommy made. This hat in honour of spring:
We even found some little flowers to pose next to! This is in my Mother's front garden. My garden also appears to have some daffodils that bloomed this week! So exciting.
I couldn't find a suit to match the hat, but it's probably less embarrassing this way.
In other exciting news, Henry got his first tooth this weekend! I was totally not expecting it, but he smiled at my during bath time on Thursday and there it was! That first tooth sprouting up on his gums. Since then it's cut all the way through and is now a razor-sharp addition to his little mouth. All things considered, he coped like a little champ. My sweet little boy!
Keep an eye out for some awesome Easter themed hats coming up in the next few weeks! I've also been instructed to throw in some manly hats, so stay tuned for those as well.

Pot of Gold
St. Patrick's Day is upon us. Green clothes, green beer, leprechauns, Pots of gold and four leaf clovers are everywhere you look and everyone is celebrating their Irish heritage, no matter how distant it is.
St. Patty's day got me thinking about four leaf clovers. I've heard some people don't think four leaf clovers exist. I can assure you they do. My sister has a strange knack for finding them. She inherited this ability from my Old Oma who could also walk through a field of grass and find multiple four leaf clovers. I did some reading, apparently there are 10,000 three leaf clovers for every one four leaf clover. I've watched Chrissy pick out 10 four leaf clovers in as many minutes. I myself find them occasionally, but Chrissy finds them with reckless abandon.
Enough about clovers. Onto the hat. It was so beautiful outside today. When I looked out my window, I saw a little leprechaun with a pot of gold:

Funny, right? Or cheesy, whatever. It was hard to get a picture of this little munchkin looking at the camera because he was way more interested in nature.
Finally he looks at me! I was going to go all lame this week and buy him a leprechaun hat, but then GG said (and I quote) "Everyone's waiting to see what you come up with this week" Thanks Ma, no pressure right. In the end, I was glad I made one myself, this hat turned out pretty cute, I made it with no pattern and only a vague plan and hope that it would work out. Looks like it was my lucky day (must've been a four leaf clover).

Extra! Extra!
Well folks, it looks like the weather is slowly turning into spring like conditions! Although we've had a few icy cold days we've had enough warm days that we are facing the inevitable hat dilemma where it's too warm for hats, but I still have hats a plenty to create.
In light of the warmer forecast for the next few days, I made Henry a hat that doesn't quite cover his ears, so he can wear it without having a meltdown because it's too hot. Hopefully.
In other exciting news, our good friends welcomed their sweet daughter S to the world this week! Join me in congratulating J and R on their beautiful little girl! Henry is looking forward to a lifetime of friendship :) S's dad, J, and I have known each other since we were only 4 years old, it's kind of incredible that our children might have an even longer friendship than we have maintained. The world is a crazy place!
Here's the little man in the test shot. Nice chin rolls buddy!
He's only doing this until his acting career takes off...
Thinking about something
Dad is so silly!
Next week is St. Patrick's day, so look out for a St. Patty's Day theme!

The Frog Prince
Since we've been dreaming of spring lately, I thought it only appropriate that we have a spring-ish themed hat this week (one that our Granny would definitely approve of). GG on the other hand has a different opinion of frogs. I encourage you to listen to the audio in that link, so you get the full idea, there was a spring peeper living outside my parents home for weeks last year, and looks like the time is soon arriving when he'll be back!
This hat was pretty simple, I just made a beanie and added eyes and a mouth. I was going to put earflaps on it, but I ran out of yarn. I've been sticking with the crocheted hats because they lend themselves beter to caricatures than knitted hats (crocheting holds its form better). I'm beginning to wonder what we're going to do in the summer when it's too hot for hats. I suppose we could just pose with them. Anyone have any good ideas for summer hats we could create?
Today I had a smiley little "snack pirate," enjoy!
Froggy pose!

Family Day's a hoot!
Monday February 20th marks Family Day in Ontario. My family celebrated a little early this year on a day when we could all be together. We had an excellent day with the greater family and it looks like we'll get to have our own little family day on Monday with just our little family which will be lovely as well.
Here we are:
Oh no wait, that's just our shoes...Adidas all the way :)
Big thanks to Justin for being our photographer for these shots (we're being photobombed, can you see it)?:
A slightly more obvious photobomb, oh Rosie:
Here's a closer shot of the owl hat
That handsome man (next to the little handsome man) is my dad, aka Poppa J.
